Let us assume you are running under X11, so you are invoking edit.data.frame and hence the data editor.

There is a Quit rectangle at the top right of the window, and you click on that. Probably closing the window also works (it does for me), but this depends on your Window Manager.

If you are not running X11, you need to quit the external editor which is by default vi (and ZZ is one way).
