I have never used RMySQL, but from the error message, this looks like an incompatibility between it and DBI, presumably because one is newer than the other.

I have always found it easier to use RODBC. Because it uses the more general ODBC interface, it may be slower than a package that is tuned to a particular database, but it works, which is a substantial advantage.
