Try this using DF since df is the name of an R function:

# test data from post
DF <- structure(list(x = c(2, 4, 1, 3, 3, 2)), .Names = "x", row.names = c("1",  "2", "3", "4", "5", "6"), class = "data.frame")

rowsum(DF, gl(nrow(DF),2,nrow(DF)))
