you probably started your else on new line e.g.

> if (a<b) {print("Hallo")} {

Error: syntax error in " if (a<b) {print("Hallo")} {"

> if (a<b)

+ {print("Hallo")} else
+ {print("OK")}
[1] "Hallo"
