I finally managed to make it work (I just needed to have a X11 window open).

Like Marc, I don't use a Mac either. But the underlying BSD OS is basically similar to Linux. On Linux, my primary X11 DISPLAY envvar would be ":0.0", so (at a guess) I suggest you try
