[R] naive help with setting node attributes

I have been trying for a LONG time to figure out how to do what I imagine is a fairly simple graph rendering issue. Can anyone help me figure out how to take two LARGE graphs G1 and G2 (not random) and set their node/edge attributes separately and uniquely such that when they are joined, G1 and G2 will retain their unique attributes under rendering?

Thanks,
AJ
