Brian is too modest to mention explicitly that it is his book with
Bill Venables, "Modern Applied Statistics with S-PLUS", that he has in
mind. See

Their book is widely regarded as the best introduction to S-PLUS and
related languages. Especially when supplemented with their "R
Complements" document, available from the above-mentioned web site, it
provides an excellent tutorial introduction to R.
