That looks to be useful, but I should be more specific about my
problem. R is compiled on Linux, and seems to work perfectly on
the Linux console, which has the X11R6 libraries and fonts.

But the Linux console is in another office. I wanted to try it
out on the Sun workstation sitting on my desk, which only has the
X11R5 libraries. Thud! This will not be an uncommon occurrence.

(What happens when I compile R on my Sun workstation is another
story. It bombs, too, but I expected it would do so. The system
is in a woeful state software maintenance and I have no control
over it whatever. I just have to take it.)

This is not the problem on my Sun. I have checked this one.

Now for something completely different and basic. I simply
cannot fathom this one at all (from a Linux window on a Sun):

bash$ R
