Well security-paranoid people think that as root,
the current directory (aka ".") should NOT be part of your PATH
(the search path of commands).
That's why the computer does not 'see' the configure file in your
directory, using  $PATH  ($FOOBAR, $PATH, ... are the values of
			  'environment variables' FOOBAR, PATH,...)
You can always EXPLICITELY specify the path of a command, in your situation

	./configure Irix

instead of
	configure Irix

In order to solve the  " can't make "   that you get,
you must give the exact results that you got on your screen...
