When compiling the new release (thanks!) under Debian GNU/Linux 1.1.x,
one runs into the qt() and so on problem caused by the -O flag (now
configure sets CFLAGS to "-g -O -I../include".

If, as Douglas Bates mentioned, one adds -ffloat-store, the problem
disappears. Perhaps configure should do that automatically as long as
the problem exists (btw, does it really only happen under Linux?)

Re Debian package: I also agree that it is way too early to have an
`official' supported package (available in the Debian distribution).
What one could do, however, is to offer a package along with the R
distribution. Btw, any suggestions for a name for the package? dpkg
will not allow the single-letter `R' (or `r') ... hence at our site we
use `r-base' (to distinguish from `r-site' for future local add-ons
etc). Is there a better name?

PS. Trying to use g77 fails for some reason. Although the Makefile in
src/appl correctly has F77=g77, invoking `make' in that dir still wants
f77 ... strange.
