Subject: R-alpha: printf and relatives

is it intended to provide functions like the standard C printf,
sprintf,...? paste is nice, but not flexible enough in all cases.
E.g., I currently don't see an easy way how to convert an integer to a
string of fixed length, spaces filled up with zeros (like format
"%05d" in C would do). Any hints?
