Subject: R-alpha: North American testers wanted

This is sort-of related to R so I hope you will pardon my taking up
the bandwidth. I want to have a few good testers pound on an ftp site
and tell me if there are problems with it before I announce it to the
entire S community.

I agreed with Bill Venables and Brian Ripley to provide a North
American mirror of the ftp site for their book. I currently have the
files available for anonymous ftp at

I would appreciate reports of any problems with the server. There may
be problems with access from behind firewalls as I think the ftp
daemon wants to authenticate the IP address before transferring files.

For those interested it is the wu-ftpd running on a Debian/GNU Linux
220 franz FTP server (Version wu-2.4(14) Wed Jan 8 21:17:19 MET 1997) ready.
