Hmm.... This is an interesting statement!

i.e. Code for R, maintaining a connection to Splus so that it would be
     "backwards compatible" :-).

Speaking of compatibility, I'd be interested in knowing whether
Scompile (recently posted to S-news) is forward-compatible with R?
