Subject: R-alpha: scoping

Simon Fear asked for some of the differences between R and S with regard
to scoping rules. You can find a simple example (taken from Abelson and
Sussman) in R/demos/language/scoping. This shows how R is lexically scoped
while S-Plus has somewhat different rules. I've also put up a copy of a
not so recent paper by Ross and I on Lexical in my ftp directory.
It's in pub/research/rgentlem/lexical.tex.

For those of you worried about the Windows95 version; well it's coming
along pretty slowly. I can draw pictures and label them now. Most of the
interpreter is going and with some luck there will be a trial run by the
end of next week (provided the world doesn't end between now and then, p=0.5).

For our northern hemisphere readers: we're about to go back to teaching which
means that we'll be a bit busier than we have been and development will slow
down again.
