That's a mighty old version you've got there (well, fall'95 is a long
time ago in that world). If you're installing Linux only to be able to
run R, you can save yourself a lot of trouble by using a version that
at the very least is based on ELF binaries. That's RedHat 3.0.3 or
later (4.1 is current) or Slackware 3.0+ (I think). I'm not sure
exactly what you are experiencing, but with newer versions it simply
isn't there, everything has worked smooth as silk.
