I am an evangelical christian. St. Paul's Anglican Church, Halifax has a good answer to the question What is an "Evangelical"?, although I would add a point on the central importance of Jesus' death on the cross for our sins (which is technically known as an emphasis on substitutionary atonement)
Briefly, it describes a Christian who gives the bible the greatest importance in deciding what to believe and do (as opposed to giving equal or greater importance to declarations by church leaders or ideas of my own). It also implies a commitment to telling others about Jesus and an emphasis on Jesus' death on the cross.
